BQ34110EVM-796: EVM setting up and features doubts

Part Number: BQ34110EVM-796
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34110

Greetings,

We are starting a new project refering to the design of different interconnected modules, one of these modules will be a power management unit. On the following picture we provide you a general chematics:

We are thinking of using BQ34110 to manage that task, but we have several doubts about if BQ34110 could achieve our requeriments,so, not only we´ll adquire one prototype board (BQ34110EVM-796) to test it, but also we want to ask the following doubdts. If you think that another of your products fit better with our requeriment, dont hesitate to advice us.

---> Q1:
We want to use 2 serial LI-SOCL2 batteries (nominal voltage = 7.2V), and we hope batteries fit with BQ34110 features but... Is it possible to use those batteries with this IC? we have no reference about tehm on possible chemistries technologies list (picture below).

The following questions are easier to show you with pictures refering to connections and working, refer to the picture below.

It´s our intention implement a battery back-up system (as UPS) with 2 serial LIFEPO4 (7.2v at full charge). Our system works with external 12v power suplly and battery back-up. We have several situations depending of the state of the main power source.

A) Main power ON and battery at full charge. Power management unit should supply energy to passive modules from the main supply, and keep battery at full charge (avoiding over-voltage and stress) but minimizing battery leakage consumption.

B) Main power OFF and battery charged. Power management unit should supply energy to passive modules from back-up battery (now at 7.2v instead of 12v, but it´s under control), and set up a alarm event for advising uC about main power fault. Working as a UPS, we think that it´s one of the main features of BQ34110.

C) Main power OFF and battery almost empty. Power management unit should supply energy avoiding undervoltages level, so it must protect back-up battery cutting off consupmtion until main power is active again.

D) Main power ON and battery at not full charge. Power management unit should supply energy to passive modules from the main supply, and charging back-up battery to reach state A (avoiding over-voltage and stress) but minimizing battery leakage consumption.

---> Q2: Is it the previous working process possible?

---> Q3: Keeping in mind BQ34110EVM datasheet-Figure 1. Would we connect back-up battery between BAT+ and BAT-, Passive modules and uC between BAT+ and PACK-, and main power between BAT+ and PACK-?

---> Q4: Would we connect J5 on BQ34110EVM throuhg 16V jumper because we have 12v main power supply?

Useful features already manage by BQ34110: SOC TTE level, programmable alarms about main power fault and back-up battery almost empty.

---> Q5: Under/Over-voltage protection?

---> Q6: Is it possible get IC working on DeepSleep mode and wake up only by uC order or main power fault?

We appreciate you effort and time, and keep on awaiting of you answer.

  • Hi Departmento.
    The bq34110 doesn't have an analog from end to control charge and discharge of the battery so the schemes you described with the device controlling the power path would not work.

    Pls review the device technical reference manual for additional information. it is a comprehensive document that addresses most of your questions. Let me know if you have further questions

    thanks

  • Hello Onyx,

    Thank you so much for your answer.

    On the BQ34110EVM reference manual page 4, on the bottom of the page, I think that it´s possible to find information about how to connect external power supply with your battery pack.

    What does it means then? If your IC was think to work on UPS, it is not possible to manage battery charge?

    Our main requeriments are:

    • Charge/Discharge management on 2x serial LiFePO4 batteries.
    • 12 Vdc main power supply
    • Overvoltage and undervoltage protection
    • SoC reporting
    • Communication with MCU
    • Main power fault detection and reporting using some kind of alarm line.
    • Low quiescent currents fo achiving low current drain from main supply or back-up battery

    Do you know any IC to fit that objetives? Or a app note or document to guide us.

    Thank you in advance.
