BQ27541: BQ27541

Part Number: BQ27541
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQEVSW, BQSTUDIO

We have been using the TI Bq27541 for several years in our battery packs. We recently received a batch of fuel gauge charger boards with 27541's marked as BQ 7541 TI  I  51N8. I am not able to talk to these boards using the BQ software. All our working boards have chips marked BQ7541 TI K  3764. Is there a difference in these two chip revisions? I've checked a number of the 7541 TI I 51N8 boards and can't talk to any of them with the BQ software. All the voltages are present on the chip and it's getting the SCL and SDA signals.

Thanks,

  • Hi Mel
It is possible that the chip has older firmware on it. Extract the firmware from a functional device.
Connect the device that isn't functional and then select it bq27541 from the pop up window that appears and then program the extracted firmware on that device.

Let me know if you have further questions.

    thanks

  • I was wondering about that. Can you briefly remind me how to download the firmware in the BQ software. Can I still do this if the BQ software isn’t talking to it?
    Thanks

  • Can you take a  screen shot of what bqEVSW or bqstudio shows when you try to start up the device? That will allow us know what firmware is on the device to know if the communication issue is due to the firmware version on the chip or if the chip is in ROM mode.

if it is ROM mode, you can go to the i2c pro window and extract an srec by clicking the read to senc. You can also program the firmware on the chip by selecting the IC and clicking the program button.

    thanks

  • I think we may have solved our problem with the BQ27541 chips. I think the board house wasn't soldering the leadless chip carrier properly. I'll know more next week. In the mean time, is there a simple way to create a gg file from a dfi file using the BQ evaluation software? Thanks.
  • program the .dfi using bqEVSW and then go to data memory and extract the gg file.

    thanks
