BQ28Z610: Can't activate charge

Part Number: BQ28Z610

Hello,

I have an issue with the BQ28Z610. I don't understand why the charge cannot be activated with battery which is not full yet and no alert activated.

Here is a snapshot of my registers :

Do you have any idea why I can't charge my battery with this setup ?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Regards,

Mickael

  • Hi Mickael,

Your XDSG and XCHG are set, which means the CHG and DSG FETs are disabled. I can't tell why from your register snapshot, what is the issue. Can you provide a GG file and SREC for us to review. Any details about your setup would be helpful as well. What's your charger voltage? Are you using bq28z610EVM?
  • Hi Damian,

I send you with this message my GG file and SREC.

I am not using the EVM. The hardware I am using has been made by one of my customer.

The battery I want to charge is a 8,7 V 2 cells. I am using the lab power supply to supply the BQ.

Now the battery is at 7.8 V and the lab power supply is at 8.7 V so the BQ should charge the battery.

My goal here is to check BQ's protections and then update the ChemID and golden file.

Thanks a lot for your help,

    Mickael

  • Hi Mickael,

Did you pull /PRES pin low or set NR bit in DA Configurations? If not please do so and you should be able to charge and discharge.
  • Hi Damian,

    Thanks for your reply.

Could you please explain me what is the DA Configurations and the /PRES pin ? I'm not sure to get what they are.

I can't find the datasheet the /PRES pin as you can see in the picture below.

    Thanks for your help,

    Mickael

  • Hi Mickael,

Damian is on the right track - many bq devices have a PRES pin and a NR bit that when not pulled low or not set can prevent charge and discharge. This particular device does not have these features, but the issue is most likely based on a protection or limit being hit.

Since you don't have alert flags, a limit being hit is more likely.

After review of your GG file:

Please try reducing your battery voltage below 7.8 V when at MV (MV flag is set your in screenshot above). The advanced charge algorithm MV range for your device is currently set at 3900 mV per cell (7800 mV for the series stack).

If the issue persists, please send a full log and SREC. If the above answers your question, please click on "This Resolved my issue" button to benefit others who have the same issue.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler

  • Hi Bryan,

Thanks for your reply. I tried to reduce the battery voltage but the charge doesn't start.

I ask my client another board and it's working now. I think the one they give me have wasn't functional.

    Now the problem is resolved.
