BQ24123: Is it possible to charge four 18650 batteries

Part Number: BQ24123
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24610, BQ24133, BQ24172

Hello Sir,

I am trying to use charger ic BQ24123 in our new project, Its battery algorithm is 2P2S: four 18650 batteries(8.4V,10000mAH)

Charging current is 2A. Is it possible to charge the four batteries?

Regards

Jom sabu

  • Hi Jom,

Yes, you should be able to charge your 2S2P application with bq24123. Make sure you pull up CELLS to VIN with a resistor. ISET1 (2A charging current) and ISET2 (precharge and termination) should be set accordingly.

  • Hello Steven,
    Thanks for the response!

    Sorry for the inconvenience.
If the charger ic prefered only for charging a single cell, but it has enough current for multiple batteries. Is it possible to charge parallel battery combination?

  • Jom,

If you connect all four cells in parallel, you should be able to charge using the 1 cell setting. Since all the cells are connected in parallel, all of them will share the same voltage and current will divide between the four of them. Your maximum charging current with the bq24123 will be 2A, which will be roughly 500mA for each cell. If you need more charging current, then another device designed for higher current like the bq24133, bq24172 or the bq24610 will be needed.

    Regards,
    Steven
