BQ24450: BQ24450 operating temperature issue

Part Number: BQ24450

Dear sir,

Is it possible to use IC BQ24450 for operating temperature range greater than 70 degree celcuis.

  • Recommend operating condition is +70C.
  • Dear Sir

Thanks for your valuable guidance , Is there any battery charger IC same as BQ24450 for charging VRLA lead acid battery but with extended operating temperature rating about -40 degree celcuis to +85 degree celcuis. Suggest any good option for the same.

    Thanks and regards

  • We do not have a device that will operate at a higher temp range.  The limiting factor is the battery recommended charging range.

Do you plan to charge from -40C to +85C?

  • Dear sir

I got the conclusion from our discussion that the charging temperature for lead acid batteries is about 0 to 40 degree celcuis ,so there is no any mean to use battery charger IC of about extended temperature range is this right conclusion. Secondly if we use BQ24450 IC its recommended  operating temp. range is -40 to +70 degree celcuis , So if we will use it upto +85 degree celcuis then need to take care of pass transistor that it will not overheat itself and therefore it will heat up IC. So inshort need to take care of pass transistor.

Is there any need to take care of sense resistor ?

Below is answer to your question

Do you plan to charge from -40C to +85C?

yes if in case temperature rises upto +85 degree celcuis we are planning to charge so  what precautions we need to take so that battery and battery charger will be in safe operating condition as temperature rises to +85 degree celcuis?

According to my learning if temperature exceeds above battery operating range then charging actions need to take some preventative measures accordingly ,for example depending upon temperature need to switch battery charging method from normal or boost charge to trickle charge so as to keep battery in safe operating range and avoid self discharging . And I think BQ24450 is suitable to do these.

Battery for our application is of rating

2 quantity of 12 volt 12 AH battery in series providing 24 volt

charging temp. range: 0 to 40 degree celcuis.

discharging temp range:  -20 to +40 degree celcuis.

    Thanks and best Regards
