WEBENCH® Tools/TPS53647: Want a 3 phase design, keep getting 4 phase design

Hi,

I am trying to create a 3 phase power supply based around the TPS53647. Webench will create a 4 phase design for me ( Iout = 80A, at 0.85V). I would like to edit out one of the phases, but the EDIT button on the schematic, but it seems unresponsive. I looked at the HELP menus, and they show the schematic editor button as one of the top row buttons, so there is a difference there as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi David,

Unfortunately, the Webench model for the TPS53647 only allows for 4 phase designs and is able to configured for a lower phase count. However, you can work to simulate your design a bit more and still get a reasonable expectation of it's performance. The D-CAP+ modulator is insensitive to the number of active phases when it comes to small signal stability.

Once your compensation and output capacitance is dialed in you would have an excellent starting point for your 3 phase design. Depending on your transient specs you may have to add some more output caps when you drop a phase but the controller won't suddenly become unstable and force you to start designing from scratch.
