TPS65217CRSLR (PMIC IC) interface to LCD module and AM3351:

We are using the TPS65217CRSLR PMIC IC to drive the back LED of the LCD module. As per the datasheet of PMIC, the maximum sink current is 50mA (Isink1, Isink2) and our back LED can be driven up to 250mA. Can the TPS65217CRSLR be configured/designed to drive more current ~250mA?

  • Sunil,

The maximum sink current of the TPS65217 is 25mA with a 52.3k resistor. There are 2 parallel channels that can drive up to 10 WLEDs each, for a maximum of 20 LEDs in a backlight array.

Many LEDs can be driven at higher currents than necessary. For your LEDs, 250mA might be the absolute maximum current. The rated DC continuous current might be 100-150mA, but this would be very bright. Therefore, running the WLEDs at 25mA might be brighter than you think and acceptable in the application.

Have you tested the design yet and observed the WLED brightness in person? I can say from personal experience that I have turned on the LEDs of the TPS65217CEVM at max current and max PWM and they are VERY bright and should not be looked at for extended periods of time.
