bq34z100-G1: How to tell when it's done charging

Part Number: BQ34Z100-G1

Maybe this is a noob question, but how exactly can I tell that the gas gauge is done charging?  Obviously, I can see that the current goes down to zero, but I want to be able to look at a flag or a status somewhere to determine that the gas gauge considers itself fully charged.  This is a bit of a loaded question; I see the FC bit in the flags that seems to indicate that Full Charge is Detected; however, I charged my battery and it stopped pulling current and I have never seen this bit get set.  Could this be a configuration issue?  Or am I not understanding the proper way to detect charge completion?

Thanks,

Greg

  • Hi Greg,

Please set the Cell Charging Voltage to an appropriate Voltage for your pack, e.g., 4.2 V for a 4.2 V cell (or less).

The bq34z100-g1 detects valid charge termination in 1 of 3 ways:
    1. Current Taper method (recommended for most Li cells)
    2. Delta Temperature method
    3. Negative Delta Voltage method

For more information on these charge termination methods, please refer to section 7.3.11 in the Datasheet found here: www.ti.com/.../bq34z100-g1.pdf

To get the FC bit to set, change FC Set % = -1 and complete a full charging cycle.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler
