UCC28950: 600V ultra fast rectifiers at the main transformer

Part Number: UCC28950

Hello

Diodes D5 and D11  PART NO MURS360T3 in slum276 are rated for 600V but what i see is that the diode is across the series combination of device and the primary winding of main transformer so if Vin is 390 V DC.

Is it that anytime the voltage across this diode is going to be more than 600 like 2*390?

hows is that protecting? or is it just clamping?

any references for understanding of this working?.

thanks

Samrat

  • Hi Samrat

The diodes prevent the transformer primary from going below 0V or above Vin. Since Vin is typically 385V the max voltage stress on these diodes is 385V and 600V diodes are very conservatively derated. The benefit of this is that the voltage across the secondary rectifier diodes (or SRs) is clamped to a lower level than it would otherwise.

I'm not aware of a detailed printed explanation of the operation.

    Regards
