TPS92515-Q1: the protective function

Part Number: TPS92515-Q1

Dear all,

Could you teach about the protective function when LED is shorted or opened?

Can this device inform the state of LED with shorted or opened?

Best regards,

  • Hello Takao,

This device does not have a fault reporting function, that would need to be implemented externally if needed. But it can handle output open and short conditions just fine. If the output goes open it will just rise to VIN. If the output is shorted it will just regulate the current through the short (it is designed for shorting the output, shunt FET dimming).

    Regards,

    Clint

  • Hello Clint,

    Thank you for your answer.
Could you teach me one thing?

Why will opened output rise to VIN?
Could you teach me this mechanism?

    Best regards,
  • Hello Takao,

This is a peak detect device, so it turns on the switch until a peak threshold is reached across the current sense resistor. If the output is open then no current can flow through the resistor. So the switch turns on and stays on until boot discharges, then it will turn off to recharge boot and turn on fully again. So you are effectively near 100% duty cycle and the output rises to the input (just slightly below).

    Regards,

    Clint
