BQ24450: BQ24450: Monitor charging status

Part Number: BQ24450

Dear all,

I have selected this ic for charging 24V, 12A lead acid battery, but i am little bit confused about monitoring the status of battery and it's three mode of charging. I have following questions:

1) According to datasheet of BQ24450 , I can interface open collector output pin like ISNS, STAT1, STAT2 and PGOOD to the micro controller. am i correct?

2) should i need to give logic from micro controller to BSTOP pin or directly connect it to the ISNS for switching between modes?

3) can i read the control voltage on CE pin using Analog channel of controller? if yes please provide me the basic steps.

4) For thermal management what are the precaution taken regarding Rsense and Qext? and i want use this ic in environment contain temp above 80 degree Celsius. so can i use it? or is there any alternative for this ic for higher temp.

Warm Regards,

Prashant Chavan

  • Hi Prashant,

I think most lead acid battery manufacturers say that you should not charge any lead acid batteries in a temperature greater than 50 Degrees Celsius - this is due to the chemistry of the battery. The life of the battery will also suffer in those temperatures

Heat is the worst enemy of batteries, including lead acid

    Cheers

  • Hi Michael,

Thank you for answer, but i have few questions regarding the same , I have successfully built a charger ckt of bq24450 but facing following problems
1)state machine outputs(STAT1 and STAT2) and actual ckt outputs are not in sync.
    2) STAT1 pin voltage in milivolt... is it correct?? and in datasheet they have't mentioned STATE pin voltages in each mode of charging
3)when i decrease input voltage below 4.5V, PGOOD pin status is fine but at same time voltage at emitter of Qext is 2.9V and PRE-CHG pin vtg is 2.8v . is it correct?? if i missing something please revert back ASAP
