TLC59116: Fault detection problem

Part Number: TLC59116

We are working on a device using tlc59116 for LED lighting control. We have a problem on the ESD test, when ESD discharge apply, the LED will turn off and not respond to new command. It can be recovered by a hard or soft reset on tlc59116. We found that after the ESD discharge apply, the I2C is still function. We try to read the EFLAG register and seem that it cannot reflect the problem. Also I am confuse with the description in the datasheet. In table 1 it said 0 imply open circuit, but in table 13 it said 1 imply error occur. Also the open circuit detection is not practical as we cannot stop the PWM to check the error. Can anyone help on that.

  • Hi George,

Table 13 is the information of the error flag. TLC59116 only detects open and TSD, if this is not root cause of the channel turn off, you should not read back information form the table 13 register.

Open detection will not effectively when the channel off.

Open detection is on line even during PWM dimming.

Any more question please let me know.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Summer,

What is TSD mean? I would like to know is there way to get the LED current by the MCU which I think it would be better way to show the actual on off status of the LED.

    Regards, George

  • Hi George,

TSD means thermal protection. Nomally the register can indicated whether the channel is on/off if the circuit work normally. But the ESD test seems interrupt the process.

Would you mind to add some ESD discharge circuits in the circuit in board?

    Thanks!
