TPS65916: Capacative Load limitations?

Part Number: TPS65916
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS659039-Q1

Hi,

I am reviewing a schematic with a TPS6590377 PMIC. I noticed in the user guide, in Section 2.2.2, the total capacitive load per phase should not exceed 57uF. We also ran into this before with another TI PMIC.

Does the TPS65916 have any load capacitance limitations?

Thanks,

David

  • David,
I forwarded your question to the product specialist. he will be able to answer that for you.
  • Hi David,

The device has 57uF max capacitance specified in the datasheet, which means that it was validated and tested up to 57uF per phase.
However, we did perform testing with higher capacitive loading on TPS659039-Q1, which is the same family of PMICs as TPS65916. The application report is listed here:
    www.ti.com/.../swca286

The summary is that we didn't find any stability issues with higher capacitance across temp, so we would expect the same results to apply to TPS65916. But since it is outside of datasheet spec, the customer should perform their own testing to make sure it is stable in their system.

Note that we do not recommend going below the minimum capacitance in the datasheet, since there is a risk of instability at cold temp.

    Regards,
    Karl
