TPS43060: TPS43060

Part Number: TPS43060
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC39002, LM5170-Q1, LM5170

Hello,

I have a question about TPS43060. I want to use this boost controller in 24 to 28V application, but I need higher current. Is there any chance that I can parallel up to 5 of these converters with UCC39002 load sharing controller and I know it will work correctly? Has anybody some experiences with this solution? Or is there any other solution how to get more than 100 A ? Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards,

Erik

  • For 100A @28V it is almost 3kW and I don't think 5 TPS43060 is adequate owing to its limited gate drive capability. You may use UCC39002 or LM5050 for load sharing, but you also need multiple of these devices to parallel enough phases.

I would like to recommend you to consider our high power dual channel control the LM5170-Q1, which is able to support your 100A in four phased with two devices in master/slave mode, and it has built-in 4phase interleaving operation, with well balanced current sharing among 4 phases. It is developed for bidirectional application but it can be used for boost only. You can order two LM5170 EVMs and verify the concept quickly.

    Thanks,
  • Hello,

first of all Thank you for your advice. I really appreciate it. I have already started design of DCDC with LM-5170 and I will it use in unidirectional boost mode, but I have no idea how to set value of output voltage. As I said I need to convert 24V to 28V. There is only currrent regulation, but for voltage regulation I dont see any sollution. I was looking at evaluation board, but I did not find anything what would explained me how to regulate output voltage. Is there any way how to change the output voltage?

    Thank you in advance,

    Kind Regards,

    Erik

  • Please refer to U2A of the EVM schematic. It is the voltage error amplifier and R75 and R77 sets the boost output voltage. The ref voltage is provided by U13, which is 2.0V.

For you boost only, you do not need the buck mode voltage loop, which is implemented with U2B. You should also disable the circuit breaker function by placing a 10K across SYNCOUT and AGND, and short the breaker FETs (Q5,6,8,9 on the EVM).
  • Hello I was blind and did not see that dif. amplifier. I bought 2 EVM and everything works fine ! I have 28volts at output and 2xEVMs supplies more than 75 Amps of current, But the efficiency of amplifier is not high enough as I expected. The efficiency achieved maximum of 85% and for me its not enough. How can I improve the efficency? Is there any part of design, where should I focuse on? Or why cant I reach better efficiency. Thank you very much for answer. I hope I will not have to bother you anymore.

  • The EVM efficiency is 96% at full power for 48Vin and 14Vout. You must read the voltage and current at the EVM output port and input port with volt and ampere meters for a proper efficiency calculation. The cables from the power supply to the input port of the EVMs, and from output ports to the Eload have significant power losses on the connection cables.

By the way, I am concerned about your 28Vout setting. The standard EVM sets OVP at about 20V with OVPB. You need to reduce the OVPB resistor to allow 28V output.
