TPS61160A: Using TPS61160A in SEPIC configuration

Good evening to everyone,

I would like to know if is possible to use the TPS61160A in SEPIC configuration like, for example, the LM3410 can do.

I prefer TPS61160A agains LM3410 because it offer an "analog dimming" for led current and also the embedded open led condition.

My power is from a LiPo battery that can start from 4.2V and can go down to 3V and i've only 1 led at the output with 800mA with maximum current and almost 3.7V for forward voltage.

Hi Lucas,

According to your application, your maximum current is 800mA which is above over the current limit of TPS61160A. So this device may not suitable for you. Thanks.

Hi Luca,
Could you please let me know what your application is? You could look up our flash devices, such as LM36010. Instead of SEPIC mode, it supports Pass mode for output voltage is lower than input voltage.

I've a single point of light that needs to be dimmed from 50% to 100%.

One single led with 3.7V at 800mA.

The supply is from a LiPo battery that can work from about 3V to 4.2V, so this is the main reason for SEPIC.

I need to drive the led also if the battery voltage goes down the 3.7V.

If i reduce the led current, for a third application, is possible to use TPS61160 in SEPIC configuration? For example with 400mA instead 800mA?

Hi Luca,
theoratically, it is possible, but we don't have exist project using that way. Please calculate the peak currrent of MOSFET, and to see if TPS61160 is fit or not.

So i'll try the TPS61160 in a SEPIC configuration.
Do you have any P/N suggestion about IC like LM3410 but with integrated open led protection?

I'm afraid I have no idea. If you are going to try TPS61160, another suggestion is TPS61165, which supports higher swithcing frequency and higher current limit, and as simple as TPS61160.
