LP2980-ADJ: Ceramic output capacitor for LP2980AIM-3V0

Part Number: LP2980-ADJ

I would like to obtain a technical contact at TI. We currently use your LP2980 regulator in our products and have had a quality issue with a tantalum output capacitor we use on the output of the regulator, the ESR was out of specification which caused instability on the output of the LP2980 regulator.  We would like to explore whether we can use a ceramic capacitor instead of the tantalum going forward, the Murata part recommended in your datasheet has gone obsolete and the we cannot find a supply of the Tokin part (not sure if it is obsolete). Please can you advise whether it is possible to have direct contact with someone at TI as we would like to use a part recommended by TI. Many Thanks.

  • Hi Jay,

There is a section in the datasheet discussing the stability of the LDO using ceramic capacitors. If you use a ceramic capacitor you will have to add a small series resistance (~1 ohm) to the capacitor to help stabilize the LDO as the ceramic capacitor will have a very small ESR. Unfortunately we do not recommend external components, but you should be able to use any ceramic capacitor that has an X5R or X7R dielectric. Be careful to select a capacitor that will not derate below the recommended capacitance value when it is DC biased and taken over temperature.

The datasheet also mentions that a feed forward capacitor is necessary for stability, so make sure that you have that on your schematic as well.

    Best Regards,
    Mark
