BQ78350-R1: does bq78350-R1 has inbuilt cell balancing feature without using bq76940

Part Number: BQ78350-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76940, , BQ78350

if bq78350-R1 has cell balancing feature, what is the use of using it has companion with bq76940

  • Hi Siva,
The bq76940 is a battery monitor device, sometimes also called an analog front end (AFE). It has analog interfaces to the cell voltages, current, and temperature, and has digital outputs for a MCU. The AFE term is more typically used for devices with analog outputs. For cell balancing the bq76940 has the circuit structure to bypass and control bypass current for each cell, but does not have the decision making capability for accomplishing a balancing action. It provides only an on and off condition for the circuits and relies on settings or commands from an external controller to achieve the battery cell balancing.
The bq78350 is a controller or gauge. It is a specialized purpose MCU designed to support the bq769x0 monitor family. It has limited analog inputs relying mostly on the bq769x0 monitors for sensor information. For cell balancing it controls the algorithm for balancing. It does not have the circuit features to control current, it provides the decision making and controls the circuit in the bq76940 to achieve the battery cell balancing.
