EV2300: firmware update issues

Part Number: EV2300

win7 64 bit - the correct drivers have been installed and I can -mostly- read valid data from the unit, but it has 3.1c firmware which apparently has known issues with our fuel guage.

F/W update needed to correctly talk with BQ28Z610DRZR else I get spurrious readings that cause it to autoscale everything and make the charts completely useless.

Our company then bought a 2nd pod because to do the update you need 2 of them :/

When I tried to use the updater I got the 'bq80xrw.ocx' missing error. as found here: e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/battery_management/f/180/t/619378

I installed SLUC177.exe as administrator and the file error went away.

Now It launches the update program but just fails when I click program... "Error (error: 8)programming device from srec: .\SMBCntrlr_1_LED_3_1m.srec"

case removed on target ev2300 to program, J7 jumper placed, included cable linked from SMB to SMB, both devices plugged into USB.

So what am I doing wrong now? We've now spent enough to get an EV2400, This is quite frustrating due to time-sunk, EV2300 was listed as compatible with no mention of needing firmware upgrades, much less needing to buy a 2nd unit.

Is there any way we could just exchange these 2 for a single EV2400? I could overlook the beta win7-64 support but the rest of this is just too much for a firmware fix that was around this long, we just bought these and this problem was apparently addressed over a year ago.

Apologies, but this has become increasingly frustrating as we are trying to evaluate and create a replacement batterypack on a time-crunch.

  • Hi Reed,

You're on the right path. Please try restarting the computer, installing EVSW as administrator, restarting the computer again, and then following the steps in the 'EV3200 Update Process.pdf' again. It sounds like you have, but please bear with me and complete the steps in exact detail.

I have tested these instructions and they work on my win7 64 bit computer.

Please let me know if the issue persists after the above steps have been performed.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler
  • Thank you Bryan,

I had installed as administrator from the start but had not rebooted yet, I had a few critical things open I'd be unable to close, and the devices were reporting as recognized, so things -looked- fine on the driver-level when in fact they must not have been.

A reboot did indeed fix the issue for me, and I was able to update both EV2300 to 3.1m, Thanks!

I had even jumped over to a win7-32 machine prior and tried there, but I got the exact same "Error (error: 8)programming device..." error because I hadn't restarted I'm sure.

Hopefully others can learn from my folly here. "Have you tried turning it off then back on again?"
  • Hi Brian

I have a similar scenario to the one described by Reed, except I'm using bq35100 EVM. My EV2400 won't work on my Win 7 and bqStudio, so Onyx had sent me 2 EV2300 devices, with FW 3.1c that need to be upgraded to 3.1m. I've followed his instructions, using EV2300_Tester application, and got the same Error 8.
I've tried to reboot the computer, and it didn't help. Since Onyx is on vacation till February 19, if you have another idea, I'd be happy to hear.
  • I would definitely go all the way back to the driver install and SLUC177.exe, and make sure they were installed as admin, reboot then try running the updater utility again.

They both need to be powered and the slave pod needs a jumper set. both pods linked via SMB port.

Also of note, power cycle the target pod a few times and see how it powers up, mine seemed to start up with at least 3 unique LED sequences, no idea why.. unsure if it really affected anything, but it wasn't consistent.
  • Well, after multiple tries I've finally succeeded to upgrade it. Tried to the same with the other EV2300, but didn't succeed there, so I gave up for now.

    Thanks for your help.
