TPS709: Peak current limit, maximum continuous current

Part Number: TPS709

TPS709 datasheet shows the summary in the first page: 150mA continuous current, and 200mA peak output current. I do not however find those numbers listed in the Electrical Characteristics table. Should I rely on the summary description rather than table 6.5? Also, if the peak current is 200mA, how can the part limit the current at 320mA typical?

Thank you!

  • Hi Lenio,

TPS709 is a 150mA LDO. The device has a typical current limit specification of 320mA. Current limit in an LDO is defined by establishing an upper boundary for the current supplied. During normal operation, LDO should not running continuously in or close to the current limit.

For the 200mA peak current on the front page, this is also related to current limit. The current limit specification has a lower limit of 200mA which means the device will at least be able to output 200mA current before entering to current limit. Since datasheet limits have been verified with 150mA load current, I would suggest to use the device up to 150mA continuous load.
