TPS23753A: about transformer

Part Number: TPS23753A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS23753

Hello,

I am evaluating to use TPS23753A in our PoE PD product. The output requirement is 5VDC/2A. Fortunately, TPS23753AEVM-235 gives a very good example. I still have a question about transformer.

I found that some transformers (such as HA3802-BL, NA6223-AL) can be used in your reference design for 5V/2A output. But when I checked these transformer's spec, I found that they are designed for TPS23753. I am not very familiar with transformers. I just want to confirm if I have to choose these customised parts, or can I choose some other off-the-shelf parts. If I can, is there any guidelines to choose the transformer.

Thank you!

Michael Chang

  • Hi Michael,

The EVM recommends, in it's BOM, the power transformers that we've tested and verified to perform to the specs described in its user's guide.

You can use off the shelf transformers as long as you verify it on bench that it performs to your specs under your required operating conditions.

I also recommend reading the below app note that describes in detail how to design a simple flyback using the TPS23753A (including the transformer design). This way, you can optimize your design based on the transformer you decide to use. Thanks!

  • Thanks Darwin, I will study the app note and check more information about that transformer.
