TPS63000: Power Save Mode Description Unclear

Part Number: TPS63000

Hi Team,

There's a paragraph in the datasheet describing when does TPS63000 enters the power save mode and how it response to the light load regulation. However, I don't quit understand the description. ( the highlighted part)

Thanks a lot!

Best,

Nancy

  • Power Save Mode means that the device operates in a mode where it consumes less power internally. This is done by stopping operation.
Since the output voltage still should be kept close to the nominal value, stopping operation is possible only at low load when the output capacitor can supply the load for some time.
While the device has stopped operating it still needs to control the output voltage to make sure that the load is supplied properly and switch back to normal operation before the output voltage gets too low. Whether the device is in a low load condition in this device is detected by monitoring the average inductor current.
  • Hi Juergen,

Does this means that the IC enters the power save mode when the average inductor current is less than 300mA? Thanks.

    Best,
    Nancy
  • Yes, at 300mA typical average inductor current the device stops operating, if the power save mode is enabled and the output voltage is nominal or higher.
