Can you confirm that D+ and D- should both be grounded if the customer is not using the remote diode temperature sensing?
The datasheet states they should be shorted together, but I wanted to distinguish between: they are tied together floating vs tied together and grounded.

They can be both grounded. However the best practice is have a tiny SOD323 Bat 54 diode connected like shown in the figure next to the IC pins. This will make sure current limit point is not skewed to one direction as in the case when both pins are grounded since the IC thinks its a very hot inductor when a low voltage is seen across D+ and D-.
