BQ34Z100-G1: Trying to use this gauge for replaceable CR123 batteries (2 in series).

Part Number: BQ34Z100-G1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ35100

Good afternoon.

I am attempting to implement the BQ34Z100-G1 (using the evaluation module) to gauge the SOC of two series CR123 batteries.

These batteries are not rechargeable, meaning when they are "dead" they are replaced with a fresh pair of batteries.

So I believe I have set the chemistry properly and all of the flash parameters, but I am unsure if I will ever successfully complete a learning cycle...

In most documentation I have read, you are required to charge the battery pack which is part of the learning cycle, however when I get to that point I simply replace

the batteries. In doing so it powers down the evaluation module which then comes up again with the new batteries.

Will I ever complete a learning cycle this way, or am I spinning my wheels? Secondly are there any other flash parameters that need to be set to allow for this?

Thank you for your time.

  • Hi Ryan10,

The bq34z100-G1 is not recommend for primary cells (cells that are not rechargable). The bq35100 is able to gauge and monitor multi-cell primary cell configurations. For more information on the bq35100, please refer to the product folder found here: www.ti.com/.../bq35100

If you have any questions, please let us know!

    Sincerely,

  • Bryan,

According to section 8.2.4 of the BQ34Z100-G1 datasheet, it states that this device can be used for system side replaceable batteries as long as the chemistry and

design capacity is the same. Which is true in my application.

I already have a PCB in fabrication that utilizes this device.

In order to create the "golden file" I am using a evaluation module, however the process has not been successful.

We require assistance beyond what can be acquired though the data sheet and various message boards of limited use.

Can you provide a proper procedure for implementation of this device with 2 CR123 non-rechargeable batteries in series?
