TPS2H160-Q1: Current Limit Accuracy

Part Number: TPS2H160-Q1

Hi,

We have a circuit implemented as follows:

The current limit for a single output should be 1A nominal, 1.15A max for this circuit.  I've been testing with various high power resistive loads under two different loading conditions: the switch is either enabled with the load attached or the load is attached after the switch has been enabled.  With a nominal load of 18 ohms and after enabling the switch with the load attached, the output current limits to 0.96A at 18.3V with the fault pin going low until thermal shutdown occurs (as expected).  With the same 18 ohm nominal load and with the load attached after enabling the switch, the output sources 1.23A at 23.4V with the fault pin staying high.  This was replicated on a similar circuit with both outputs tied together for a combined maximum current limit of 3.06A, but currents as high as 3.34A were observed again with no fault indicator.

How is it that these test conditions are resulting in current levels that exceed the part's specified +/-15% tolerances for the current limit?

Thanks,

Nick Medor

  • Hello,

We updated the datasheet for this matter and will be official soon. Here is my explanation:
1- Load is connected and then device enabled, the FET turns on and the over current is in place so the FET is in saturation region
2- Device is enabled first with no load connected, the FET is in linear region and output voltage is very close to supply voltage. When the load is connected the FET, is already in linear region, and the current limit is higher than upper limit.

Here is the statement embedded in the new datasheet
"External current limit accuracy is only applicable to overload conditions greater than 1.5X the current limit setting"
