BQ40Z50-R2: Charging with BQ40Z50

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50,

Hi,

Something about the BQ40Z50 is completely unclear to me. In the registers you can give all kinds of information about how to charge the battery pack, but how does it do those things?
The evaluation board can work with an charger of 16.8 V and 2 A, but does is charge the battery pack with that? And what are the requirements for the charger?

In short:

Does the BQ40Z50 also do the charging (with a dumb x volt, y current cable) or do I need a charger chip?
How intelligent should the charger IC be? Because the BQ40Z50 has all the information about how to charge, so, does it need to be a ic with the 'knowledge' how to charge li-ion in serie?
What are the requirements of the charger/charger ic?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,
The bq40z50-R2 only provides the gauging and protection functionality.
It can however be used with a smart charger and provide charging information via SMBus using the SBS protocol to charge the pack.
It can also be used with a regular charger to charge the pack.
To pick the appropriate charger, I would recommend using the charger selection tool at www.ti.com/.../products.html
The requirements of the charger IC will depend on your pack configuration, chemistry and capacity, and weather you want to use the SBS smart charging feature of the gauge or not.
    Regards,
    Swami
