BQ24401: single cell NiMh charging from 5V USB

Part Number: BQ24401
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2000,

Does anyone managed to charge a single NiMh cell from a 5V DC input with the BQ2000 or BQ24401?

the reference design does not work. if you provide it with 5V DC (and BQ2000 directly on the 5V), it is not regulating properly and the power stage is overheating. (in spice the power stage works fine). I tried with a load switch TPS27081 configured for high speed switching (0.2µs) but it is the same.

It looks like the BQ doesn't manage to limit the charge current properly.

Please guys, provide us with fine reference design. (low heat, low space). NiMh cells are good for low cost low power IOT but isn't many chargers build for that
