TPS23861: POE+ compatible?

Dear Team,

May I know if TPS23861 is POE+ compatible? Also, may I know if POE+ is equivalent to IEEE 802.3at standard? I see different says in the Internet. Thanks for your answering.

    Hi Andy,

    PoE+ was a proprietary high power (>15.4W) solution before IEEE802.3at standard was released(2009). It is not equal to IEEE802.3at standard. You may also heard about PoE++. It is also a proprietary high power solution(>30W) before IEEE802.3bt standard is released(3Q2018). It will not be compatible with IEEE802.3bt standard either. TPS23861 is compliant to IEEE802.3at standard and you can find compliance test report under TPS23861 product folder. Thanks.

    This topic is confusing and frustrating to many in the marketplace. In short, the answer is 'yes, with a footnote.' In my experience, I have not heard of a 'PoE+' solution having an interoperability issue with our TPS23861. As a matter of fact, our TPS23861 received a 100% interoperable score from SIFOs (highest marks). You can have confidence designing with it.

    However, we need to avoid 'guaranteeing' it because, as Penny says above, the terms PoE+/PoE++ are terms used by a competitor and they are not the same as IEEE802.3at or IEEE802.3bt compliant.

    In the future, I strongly suggest that your company consider a move away from these terms in your datasheet and consider using the more industry accepted terms.

    As additional information, please be aware that a new program has just kicked off which allows companies to earn a PoE license/logo. Your company might consider applying for this license. This new program will greatly aid in debug and interoperability discussions like this one.
