TPS65950 - BCI - In-rush current

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65950, BQ24032A

Hi,

one of my customer - wants to use TPS65950 to power up one OMAP. They would have like to use TPS65950 is the configuration A described on page 116.

What I would have like to know is:

- what is really CV mode?

- why in CV mode the in-rush current has to be limited by the wall plug? Can it be because the TPS65950 does not integrate DDPM like the BQ24032A has?

Thanks!

Leon.

  • Hi Leon,

CV mode - You can power the device when thereis not battery connected. If there is AC charger connected then the internal VBAT node is regulated at 4V and the PMIC will turn ON. In this mode there is acurrent limitation on 1A. This is not a recommended application mode, this is more for test and debug.

If you compare the two schematics one that supports CV mode and other that does not support CV mode then you will notice that the RC compensation circuit is connected differently. When the RC is connected to charger supply then the circuit ensures that you do not damage the PFETs or internal circuit. This isnt the case when compensation circuit is connected to VCCS.

    Hope this helps.

    Gandhar.
