UCC28063DR gate driver rms and peak sink ans source current

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28063

I would like to know the maximum sinking and sourcing current of Part number UCC28063DR. This part is used in the design to drive two MOSFET each having 1440 pF gate capacitance; also there is a 13.3 Ohms resistor in series. The system does sometimes fail and internal gate driver circuit to the IC appears to be damaged. I don't know exactly what is causing system failure, all I know is that the gate structure appear damaged as pictured on X-ray imaging. Datasheet does clearly explain that a series resistor is not needed to drive the gate but a small 5 or so Ohms could be used if it does make since to do so. Now, am I exceeding gate rms current limit, which consequently destroys internal gate drive circuit structure of IC? I would like to know maximum rms and peak current this particular IC can source and sink.

thank you,

  • Hello Badibanga,
Your input capacitance is very high to be driving directly from the UCC28063
You should either use a gate driver ic or a totem pole NPN, PNP bipolar drive
The base resistance from GDA,GDB should be about 27 Ohms.
You will need about 2.2 Ohms on the collector of the NPN
Both emitters are connected together and to the gate of the boost MOSFET through a 10 Ohm resistor.
    Regards
    John
