I'm trying to use the GDK with BQ27421 EVM and bqStudio.

First, the battery shows 0% with its voltage at 4.011V (the battery is actually close to fully charged).
I click on "Start" button to charge and got the following error, "BAT_DET bit must be enabled. Operation aborted!\"
- There is no 3rd lead (thermistor) from the battery. So how'd I force the BAT_DET bit?

Hi Andrew,
Pls review the quick start guide for the EVM of the bq27421. It contains set up instructions. You need to cleaer the BIE flag in operation config register of data flash since you do not have a thermistor, click the battery insert command in the command window and the batdet flag will get set. Otherwise set the BIE flag and use a thermistor.

Hi Onyx,
I was able to set the BAT_INSERT once, and everything seemed to run (all battery parameters).
However, once I click on the RESET, I can't seem to get it working again.
I get the following response by clicking on "BAT_INSERT": N/A

Is there a certain sequence of commands to run to get bq27421A to report the battery parameters?

Hi Andrew,
You shouldn't press the reset button otherwise that will clear the bat_insert i believe. If at all you need to reset the gauge, it should be a soft reset. again I have to remind you to read the quick start guide for the EVM.

Hi Onyx,
The following is the BQ27421 EVM I use.

And I've reviewed the User's Guide (as opposed the quick start)

The guide doesn't seem to help with the issue I'm having.
Could you point me to the correct section I should review?

I have actually looked at this document previously.
I think the issue I'm having is not being able to send a command, especially BAT_INSERT, from bqStudio to the bq27421A EVM.
The command returns with "N/A".
Does this have to do with the fact that the GDK has its own bq27421 EVM? Perhaps I can try to use the internal bq27421 EVM.

The JP7 on GDK is BIN pullup or pulldown selection. I've set it to low, as our battery does not have an active thermistor.
Also the bq27421A comes up unsealed. Do i need to perform UNSEAL and SEAL to force the BIE to be set?

Andrew,
There are two options like i pointed out in my earlier post. One with the thermistor, the other without the thermistor. if no thermistor is used as in your case, clear the BIE flag and click the bat insert command. then make sure the batdet flag is set.

Make sure the device is in unseal and full access mode. The SS and FAS flags will be set if you are unsealed and in full access mode.

How'd I clear the BIE flag? by sending a clear command in "Advanced Comm I2C". Could you let me know the specific steps?

Currently the BAT_DET bit is green and the bq27421 seems to be in unsealed mode (otherwise it would show a lock next to it).

I think I would need specific steps to follow thru.

I think I figured it out. It was under Data Memory -> Configuration -> Registers -> OpConfig

You then click on the BIE bit (Bit 5 of OpConfig) and click on "Write to Data Memory".

It is now charging. I see the Charging LED on (orange). I also see the STAT LED (red). Should the STAT LED be on?

See GDK user guide for the definition of that LED. If you are charging ok, then i believe everything is good.
