BQ4050: help with configuring the gas gauge

Hello,

 I am configuring a SBS design. The designer of the product has left the company and I am here to configure the BQ4050 while discovering everything.

The product uses 4 cells of Li-Ion, connected in 2 pairs of 2, i.e. the Gas Gauge sees 2 cells.

After reading the docs (datasheet, sluuaq3.pdf, etc) I have a few questions:

- For the design parameters,(Design Capacity, Design Voltage), I suppose that I take the data directly from the battery spec ?  If so, do those parameters refer to the overall pack or to a single cell ?

- I read here: https://e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/battery_management/f/180/t/584060?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=bq4050

about default OCV table. Where do I get this from ? Is this the parameter defaults according to sluua3.pdf ?

- Do I have to go through all the 500 parameters manually ? If I understand right, the GPC report will give me all the gas gauging parameters ? The calibration parameters are filled in during the calibration process ?

- To charge my batteries, the BQ4050 pulls the FET drives automatically depending on SOC, or do I always need to send the FET commands via SMBus ?

    Hello,

    so far I am not able to drive the CHG or DSG fets.

    What could be the reason of not charging or discharging ?

    The BQ4050 does not seem in standby, since I have communication with bqStudio. The cmds FET_EN, DSG_FET_TOGGLE, etc do not work.

    I tried pulling the PRES to GND over 2K, but no difference. (actually it is not used since it's a non-removable design, the pin has been left floating)

    I attach a schematic with the voltages as well as the parameters and the registers below. If anyone can help me setting up the parameters right, I'd appreciate greatly.

    Just resolved this problem. I came across a section in the sluuaq3: If the device detects a FUSE pin high state, the CHG and DSG FETs are turned off.

    I realized that the FUSE pin has been left floating, this is why I cannot charge or discharge.

    Can anyone still have a look at my questions in the first post ?

    Design Capacity is the nominal capacity of your pack from the design spec.
    Design Voltage is the nominal pack voltage (typically 3.7V/cell * 2 = 7.4V, for example).
    I'll quote Tom here: "You can use the default OCV table that is loaded in the device for most Li-Ion cells. The gauge only uses the OCV table when the cells are first attached or if the gauge is reset. Ortherwise, it uses coulomb counting to track the capacity. You will need to use the online GPCCEDV tool to find the CEDV coefficients for you pack and then program them into the flash memory. You can then run a charge and discharge to update the FCC and export a golden file to be used in production."
    The default OCV table is already programmed into the IC.
    You don't have to go through all parameters, and defaults are fine for some of them, but it you might want to import the .gg.csv file into a spreadsheet and have a column with the default and a column with your chosen values. Then keep another column with your notes about the function of that parameter and why you chose each particular value. Then you can version control and add new columns each time you test with a different configuration until you settle on the final settings you plan to use in production for your "golden file".
    The FETs are automatically controlled by the gauge. The EVM powers up with the FETs off and you need to provide charge current or pretend a charger is attached by shorting PACK+ to CELL+. Also, make sure no other permanent failures are triggered by the default settings which might cause the FETs to open.

    One last tip about importing .gg.csv files into Excel:
    Do not directly open a gg.csv file in Excel or it will automatically convert the text data to numbers.  Excel will strip off leading zeros and trailing decimal places with zeros.  Once this happens and you save it you will not be able to import that file into bqStudio anymore.  To avoid this you must import the gg.csv into Excel as text, and then you can copy and paste columns and edit the file and save it in Excel while maintaining the text formats.  Here is the detailed procedure:
     
    You can import a gg.csv file as text into Excel by following these steps:
    1. Open a new blank sheet
    2. Click on the Data tab
    3. From the toolbar select “From Text”
    4. Select the gg.csv file
    5. In the first dialog, “Delimited” radio button will be automatically selected. Click Next to go ahead.
    6. Unselect “Tab” and select “Comma” as the delimiter.
    7. In the next screen you can select the format of the columns. Scroll down in the “Data Preview” area a bit and you will see all the columns. I press shift and use the mouse to select all the columns. Now, select the “Text” radio button.
    8. Click “Finish”
    9. Now you can save the gg.csv file and all fields will retain the correct formatting so that it can subsequently be imported into bqStudio.
    10. NOTE that the next time you open this file you still need to go through the entire process to import it again!
