TPS92515HV-Q1: Using TPS92515 as a variable current source to drive a solenoid

Could TPS92515 be used to drive a proportional valve solenoid to set the solenoid current real time?  At low current, voltage across the solenoid will  be low, would the low voltage cause TPS92515 go into LED short circuit response?

    That device is great as a constant current source and can be used for a solenoid. It is also designed to be capable of operating into a short (shunt FET dimming) so low voltage is no problem. Depending on how low you may want to consider a second off timer connection (as also explained in the shunt FET dimming section) so the off timer works correctly. Basically it's useful for an output below the 1V off timer threshold.

    In short it is designed for shorted outputs and should work well.

    I hope I understand what do you mean by shorted output - use the solenoid as inductor for the circuit and short the output.  Is this correct?

    I actually meant that the circuit as-is can run with an output short so there would be no issues driving a solenoid with it.

    However, that is an interesting idea. You could possibly short the output and use the solenoid as the circuit inductor. But that depends on the solenoid inductance and the switching frequency. For best operation you would like to have 10mV or more peak-to-peak voltage ripple on your VIN-CSN current sense resistor. So if you can switch at a low frequency and/or the solenoid inductance isn't too high it would work. You would need to derive the OFF time using VCC as described in the shunt FET dimming section of the datasheet.
