TPS62050: about Power-Save Mode calculation formula

Part Number: TPS62050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62160

Hi,

Could you tell me about TPS62050 power save mode?
When using different lot devices, PFM mode sometimes occurs in same circuit and parts conditions.
For that reason, I am investigating what affected PFM mode.
Please tell me how to calculate the PFM threshold of this device.

Best Regards,
Yusuke / Japan Disty

  • Hi Yusuke-san,

Power save mode and its thresholds are explained in section 9.4.3 of the D/S. If the PFM mode is causing some issue, simply pull the SYNC pin high to force PWM mode.

As well, this is a very old device. May I recommend the TPS62160 instead?
  • Chris-san,

    Thank you for your response.
I will introduce TPS62160 to customers.

    However,
Customers have been using TPS62050 for many years.
This customer application is a model that diverted past model circuit.
In addition, it is necessary to use PFM mode.

    In the background,
Customers are investigating changes in thresholds due to lot changes.
The data sheet shows the following contents.

I would like to show that the threshold differs with spec variation of parts of TPS62050.
    Please tell me the followings.
・Could you tell me specific voltage of "low input voltage" and "maximum input voltage".
・Please advise on the spec variation related (Fsw etc..) to the threshold of PFM mode.
・Could you tell me the formula to enter PFM mode.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Yusuke-san,

Yes, the exact threshold will vary over temperature, Vin, and part to part. We do not specify this variation. Low Vin refers to 2.7V and high Vin to 10V.

If it is critical to not operate in PFM mode, then they can actively toggle the SYNC pin high or add more load current.

The only variable in the PFM/PWM point is output current.
