BQ76930: Can the bq76930 be used to monitor 4 cells

Part Number: BQ76930
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76940, BQ76920

Hi all,

I'm in the process of designing in the bq76930 in a LiFePo4 8-cell pack as a AFE. I'm wondering, will the bq76930 be capable of measuring only 4 cells (with the appropriate shorting of the sense pins)? The datasheet only specifies that it can go down to 6 cells, but I don't see a particular reason why it should not be able to handle 4 cells only.

Cheers!

  • Hi Aleksandar,
The minimum recommended cells with the bq76930 is 6. The minimum operating voltage is based on the cell group voltage, with 4 cells there would only be 2 cells for each group. With LiFePO4 cells and the recommended 6 cell minimum configuration the minimum voltage range of the cells may be limited to stay above the recommended 6 V minimum operating voltage. Attempting to use 4 cells would further reduce the range of the cells to meet the minimum operating voltage. 4 cells is not recommended with the bq76940, if you do choose to try this operation use the top and bottom cell of each group.
  • Hi,

Thanks for the reply! In order to comply with the minimum voltage requirements, I will put the bq76920 IC in parallel with the x30 and decide what to populate based on the model of the battery.

    Thanks!
