BQ25120A: update Vsys on the fly? and smallest inductor options?

Part Number: BQ25120A

Hi team,

Is it possible to update Vsys on the fly without resetting the device? Section 9.3.21 mentions the registers to update, but not if a reset is needed.

Also, I'm trying to find the smallest inductor that can be used for this device. The smallest ones that the datasheet recommend are 0603. I'm trying to find an 0402 inductor instead. Something like this one

The issue I'm running into is the appropriate saturation current and the max DCR that's acceptable. The DCR is much higher for the 0402 (1.3 ohm max). This usually doesn't affect stability but are there any other concerns we should have with this DCR? (the efficiency hit isn't much of a concern).

For the ripple current using equation 7 I get 129mA (Vsys = 3V, Vpmid = 3.7V, L = 2.2uH, f = 2 Mhz). Using equation 8 I get the max inductor current of ~90mA with a max 25mA load. We'll be in DCM at this load, so do these equations still hold? All of the papers I could find on it suggest that they do. Should I be looking for an inductor with >90mA of saturation current then? If that's the case, I couldn't find anything in an 0402 package, the closest was this part:  but the saturation is at 60mA (defined as 50% reduction in inductance).

any other options we could look at?

Thanks!

Nate

  • Hello Nathan,
VSYS can be updated on the fly through I2C with no reset to the device. Regarding the inductor current, i couldn't find an inductor with an appropriate saturation current and DC resistance for your application. I'll suggest using the recommended inductor from the datasheet. www.digikey.com/.../1856574

  • Hello Raheem,

Okay, thank you for the information. Just to confirm, was the 90mA of saturation current correctly calculated given those specs? I believe the math is right, but I wanted to confirm that the ripple current equations still hold in DCM.

    Best regards,

    Nate
