precision 5 volt DC to DC regulator

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TL780, UCC283

I am looking for a precision 5 VDC regulator.  It is powered by about 8 VDC.  A current of 1 amp is sufficient.  I need a TO-220 3 pin package.  This is to be a direct replacement for a 2940 regulator.  Pinouts are pin 1 for input, pin 2 for GND, and pin 3 for Output.  I need an industrial temperature range.  The output voltage is 5.00 +/- .05 VDC max.  Any suggestions?

  • Hi James,

I think the closest part that we will have in our portfolio is the TL780. The only problem is the accuracy over the full temperature range is 2% not 1%. However it does have a 1% accuracy at 25C.

  • This regulator is only rated to 0C. I am trying to fix a design problem in the simplest way possible by substituting a tighter tolerance voltage output regulator. The root cause of my problem is that this regulator provides not only the logic power but also provides the reference input for an A/D converter. The unit in which this IC is located may hang underneath a subway car and is exposed to the outside air temperature while sitting in the yard at night and to the sun at noon in the summer. As such, I need to go down to -10F in the worst case. Normally, we specify -25C to -40C as a minimum temperature. What will happen to this IC at -25C? How accurate will the output voltage be? Will there be any other problems at such a low temperature? There are thousands of units involved.
  • Hi James,

Unfortunately we do not have very many LDOs in this package with that pin out. I was able to find one more part, but it is only rated from -40C to 85C and it has a 2.5% accuracy. You can look at the UCC283 as well, but as I mentioned the accuracy is outside your requirements.

    Best Regards,
