bq34110: Maintaining Current SoC after Power Loss

Part Number: BQ34110

Team,

Is there a way to have the bq34110 remember remaining state of charge through a power loss?  I.E. if power is cut to the system, including the battery power, so the bq34110 is powered down. I have a customer that is reporting that upon return of power to the BQ34110, they almost always read 8% SoC, no matter what charge % the battery is actually at when power is cut.

  • Hi Carolus,
    Unfortunately not.
Once the IC loses power and reboots, it can't know what happened during the power loss so it must reset it's coulomb counter and try to initialize based on a voltage reading, which will typically have error, especially if current is flowing during the initialization.
The gauges using Impedance Track can try to compensate for the flowing current during initialization so it should be better, but it will still not be perfect. The bq34110 uses CEDV which relies more heavily on coulomb counting and can't do this compensation.
