TPS54531: Input Power protection with wide Range input supply

Hi team,

I am having wide input supply ranging from 9V to 24V and my device need 5V,4A regulated supply so I have selected TPS54531.

Basically my application is HMI that will be integrated in a PLC.

Now my concern is about the power input protection(industrial grade) that I need to give to this .

I need at least below mentioned protection

a) Reverse Polarity Protection

b)Short circuit protection with very fast response.( I have doubt that normal fuses might not respond quickly please suggest)

c)Surge Protection

d)Over voltage Protection

can you Please suggest any reference design/document so that I can use it to implement in my design.

I have gone through the eFuses but it doesn't meet my input voltage and output current spec, so I am planning to give the protections using discrete components so that my product is safe from industrial noises.

Since there is some cost constraints I am not going for power module.

Please guide me in this .

Do you want to add those protection at input port or output port of TPS54531?

Hello Karthik,

when those protection is triggered, what behavior do you want about TPS54531? shut down or something?

I think you can add protection item b,c,d at output port of previous level circuit.

Hi Edwin,

No I want it in input port only(after the power jack next section should be my protection circuit), I want to filter all the electrical noises before reaching to my Regulator itself So please suggest how to do it?Because in industrial environment we cant predict the noises that might damage my HMI. So I need a very good power protection circuit , so that my HMI can withstand those noise.
I want an industrial grade protection so I am bit worried about it.

Hello Karthik,

I only give simple suggestion for your refer, it need you double check.

a) you can use a reverse diode.

b)you can use a MOSFET series with input line. and create a logic circuit that compare the voltage with zero.

c)please add TVS diode.

d)you also use a MOSFET series with input line, and create a logic circuit that compart the voltage with OV threshold.

Hi Edwin,

Any reference schematic can you provide? so it will be easy for me to understand what part(part number of individual component) should i Select? And confirm that it meets my specification.

the protection you mentioned is a request from system level, not from DCDC controller side. i drawed a simple diagram below to describe what Edwin said, hope it helps.
