LM317M: ask ESD-HBM/ESD-CDM

Hi Bryan,

LM317M was originally released by National Semiconductors 18 years ago. Due to the age and the acquisition we do not have the ESD data for this device. Could you help me understand what the customer's application requirements for an LDO are? Perhaps we have another LDO that can fit their application?

earlier datasheets from NS mention an ESD tolerance of 3kV (human body model):

This is fully enough for the handling of chip during the mounting and soldering.

A voltage regulator with mounted input and output decoupling caps can withstand much stronger ESD events, because the decoupling caps can absorb huge amounts of charge, by the way.

Hi Kai,

I believe you dug up the old datasheet for LM317 rather than LM317M. While the devices are similar and even similarly named, the ESD could be different.

Thanks Ryan, I don't know what application for them, just customer approve this device need to some data , ESD is just one of data.
