Referring to the TI BQ24171 datasheet, diode D2 connects the battery voltage to the AVCC pin in parallel with D1 from the DC input supply. What is the purpose of D2? If D2 was to fail shorted, the DC supply would be directly connected to the battery, which is a terrible fault mode. I am implementing a design with full power path switching, a two cell lithium battery, and a 12V DC supply, if it matters.
