BQ25570: Does it make any difference between connecting and not connecting VSTOR and VBAT?

Part Number: BQ25570
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS22860

Dear all,

I'm using BQ25570 to boost up the harvested power. VSTOR is connected to VBAT to charge a 15mF supercapacitor. Without the supercapacitor, I monitored that the VSTOR was boosted up to its programmed level (3.6V in my case) very quickly with a very small amount of input power (15nW?). However with a supercapacitor, it took me an hour for VSOTR to boost up to the same voltage level. The input power was the same.

In my circuit, the BQ25570 will be used to charge a supercapacitor for later use and manage a switch to supply power to the load. When VSTOR = 3.3V, VBAT_OK = 1 and the switch closes, VSTOR is supplied to the load. I need a supercapacitor to store the harvested power for later use. So, could you please recommend me another configuration of BQ25570 that still can store the harvested power up to a sufficient power but with faster time? Is if better if I do not connect VSTOR to VBAT, and use VBAT to charge the supercapacitor instead?  Thank you very much.

  • Minh,
Could you provide the circuit schematic including the switch that bq25570 manages to control?
    Regards,
    Eric
  • Minh,

The FET between VSTOR and VBAT is intended to prevent the supercap at VBAT from being discharged by the bq25570. The FETs body diode provides current flow from VSTOR to VBAT. Therefore the supercapacitor is still a load on VSTOR even before the switch closes (VBAT_OK going high). Using I = C*dv/dt and your input power * efficiency, you can predict the charge time for the supercap. For faster charging, you will need more input power.
  • Dear Jeff,
Thank you very much for your explanation. So it means there would be no difference between connecting or not connecting VSTOR and VBAT in my application. I'll change another smaller supercapacitor.
  • Dear Eric,

Above is my schematic. The switch is TPS22860. The supercapacitor installed on VSTOR is not shown in this schematic.
