BQ24450: Alternative for BQ24450

Part Number: BQ24450
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UC2906, UC3906, BQ24650

Hi Ti,

Very Urgent!!!

We are surprised, BQ24450 is now NRND. Referring earlier discussion on battery charging thread , We had selected this part for charging lead acid battery. But now it shows NRND, We have already designed our product but now we are stuck, Could you please send us substitute for this part.

Specification: I/P Vtg. 28V

                      O/P Vtg. 28V

Max. Charge current 2A to 3A

Thanks in advance!!!

Prashant

  • The bq24450 is NRND (not recommended for new design) but is not end of life, device will continue to be available.

The design is very old and we need to discourage new designs.
  • Hi Bill Johns,

Thank you for your kind reply, but what should be our stand now, wait for substitute part or go for other IC. If wait then ensure us that new design will be in same package and having same pin map.

we are hoping for positive reply,

    Regards,

    Prashant

  • Hi Prashant
No plans to End of Life the bq24450 similar device UC2906 / UC3906 are still available long after they have been NRND.

The market for Lead Acid batteries has moved to large capacity, higher voltage and higher current as other battery chemistries have replaced lower power applications. The bq24450 is a linear charge that will dissipate a lot of power across the pass element, acceptable for lower power but a problem for higher power. Also good regulation of the input voltage is required to keep this power dissipation in an acceptable range.

Due to the above many customers are using switching chargers to support larger lead acid batteries. One example would be bq24650, see application report SLVA437A.
