protection of LM317 and LM337

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM317, LM337

I have questions about LM317 and LM337.

Question 1.

Please tell us the method to detect the overcurret about LM317 and LM337.

Does the IC detect the feedback current or temperature?

Question 2.

Please tell us the recover method of overcurrent protection about LM317 and LM337.

Is it autoretry or latched off?

If it keeps overcurrent situation, what happens to the IC?

Question 3.

Please tell us the protection method and recover method about LM317 and LM337.

  • Hi Takahiro,

the LM317 (and the LM337) contains a continuously working SOA protection. During an overload situation the output voltage of regulator drops down to a value the regulator can still manage. So, the output voltage is not always dropping down to 0V. When the cause of overloading is removed the output voltage will rise to its nominal value again by itself.
