LM5134: PILOT MOSFET Selection

Part Number: LM5134
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CSD17382F4, CSD17381F4

i investigate the datasheet of the LM5134. and i find out that if some one want to use the  PILOT ability, they must add extra Mosfet to the gate drive. but in datasheet there is a section that guide how to choose this Mosfet "PILOT MOSFET Selection".

in this section TI compmany suggest that it is better to chose a Mosfet with these specification:

In general, a small-sized 20-V MOSFET with logic level gates can be used as the external turnoff switch. To
achieve a fast switching speed and avoid the potential shoot-through, select a MOSFET with the total gate
charge less than 3 nC.

a Mosfet with just gate charge less than 3 nC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???

how can we find a cheap Mosfet with these specifications

would please introduce a cost effective Mosfet for this gate drive?

thank you very much

  • Hello Ras,
Thank you for considering the LM5134 in your design. I am an application engineer supporting this device and I will address your questions. Since the PILOT FET can be low voltage such as 20V, the gate charge can be very low and still have low Rds-on and low cost.
One small MOSFET with 30V rating, 2.1nC, and 67 mOhm Rds-on is the CSD17382F4 Mosfet from TI. Another choice is the CSD17381F4 which is also low cost.
