Sorry for the delayed response. Pressing and releasing the Wake button on the EVM should wake the device and allow communication to bqStudio. The button should not need to be held. If you can write out a .gg file when you can communicate to the device, please do so and send it to me in a .zip file so I can see if any settings are putting the device immediately back into shutdown.

Have you been able to establish communication to the device?  Do you have battery voltage across the battery voltage across the J1 terminals with the proper resistor string to simulate battery voltage at each terminal as described in the EVM Guide on page 4.

We are using two 3.8V, 10Ah (nominal) Li-Ion battery cells connected across the J1 terminal (1N to the negative of the bottom cell, 1P to the positive and 2P,3P and 4P to the positive of the top cell)

Thanks for the .gg file. Can you take a short log with the WAKE button held down through letting go of the WAKE button? We can see what changes and if the part is going into shutdown. Do you have any other supply connected other than the battery?

There isn't any other power supply or load connected to the EVM.
