BQ78350-R1: Supply current and SOC and Remaining Capacity

Part Number: BQ78350-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Hi,

I wanted to know if the the 15 to 20 mA of current that is drawn from the AFE and Gauge are taken into consideration when bqstudio displays the measurement values for SOC and Capacity etc. If I were to leave my Battery unloaded but connected to bqstudio, 4 days later, would I see a change in these values? or would it be the same because no load current is being drawn?

  • Hi JP,
The AFE and gauge ICs for this chipset are typically grounded on the cell side of the sense resistor so their current consumption isn't included in the coulomb counting or current measurement. However, this consumption is typically minimal compared to the battery capacity and the Li-ion chemical self-discharge is likely dominant. Therefore the Self-Discharge Rate parameter in dataflash can be configured to estimate the self-discharge and automatically reduce SOC. The default value, per the Technical Reference Manual, is 0.2%/day. You can modify this to be more conservative if desired.
  • That makes sense. Seeing that it's pretty much fixed, I can incorporate it into the self-discharge (if it is significant enough), and just have it like that. But, you're right, it is pretty negligible on overall.
