EV2400: EV2400 Stopped communicating

Part Number: EV2400
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27542-G1

Hello,

i bought an EV2400 a few weeks ago to evaluate a fuel gauge. I used it one day, shut down the PC and tried to use it again the next day and it suddenly stops working. The LEDs are on, but the PC does not recognize the USB Device. I tried resetting through the reset button, i tried it at a different PC, tried reinstall the BatteryStudio software, tried different USB Cables and i waited a few days with the device disconnected, nothing works, the device refuses to communicate.

Is there some way to diagnose and repair the device or do i need a replacement?

  • Hi Daniel,
Thank you for your interest in our products. A BMS expert has been assigned to your question.
  • Hello Daniel,

Can you take a picture of your setup?

Also, what is your operating system?
  • If you're using Windows, please check to see if you don't have unknown devices in the device manager tab. Also, please send a shot of your setup. Which gauge are you using?
  • Here is a picture of the original working setup:

The operating system is windows 10, the device is connected through an USB Hub. But i also tried different USB ports on this machine and also tried a different computer. Also there are no unknown devices in the device tree. The device simply seems to be dead. I am using the BQ27542-G1 Fuel Gauge.

  • Hi Daniel,

Have been using an EV2400 for a few weeks. Device was working on Friday, shut everything down (including PC), then exactly the same symptoms as you on Monday morning; Lights on, but no hint of USB connectivity. Tried with several computers and cables, and even checked cables with another working EV2400.

Reading the linked original question, I suspect that the ground loop created by leaving plugged in to both the PC and the DUT (through a bench power supply) caused something to go wrong when powering down or powering up.

Having never seen a similar issue with any other USB test interface (SPI comms, I2C, JTAG adapters, etc.), I can't help feeling this really should be safe. An expensive mistake. Won't be leaving plugged in when shutting down PC again!

Sorry that isn't more helpful, but interesting to know powering down/up seemed to cause the problem for you too.

  • hi Daniel,
I checked and we've seen something like this happen before when the EV2400 hardware is damaged. In the case we saw, there was a big hole in U9 or U14 on the board. Other than a case of damage to the ICs, we haven't heard of this issue before.

    Regards,
    David
