BQ24192: with a Fuel Gauge that is not a BGA footprint

Part Number: BQ24192
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27510

Hello,

I've started a design with the BQ24192 charger and the BQ27531 fuel gauge and realized that using a BGA part is going to add significant costs to my pcb.  I have a lot of space and don't really need the BGA footprint or want to put the extra costs into the design.

Is there another complimentary fuel gauge for the BQ24192 charger or can I use anyone I can find?

Through the search tool I've found two fuel gauges that are in a footprint that will keep costs down, the BQ27510 (SON) and the BQ27441 (VSON).

Both look like they'll work for me, but is one more suited for the BQ24192 charger?

Any extra info I should know about when using a Fuel Gauge that isn't "complimentary" to the charger?

Thanks,

Dave

  • Hi Dave,
The bq27510 is not a BMU, i.e it doesn't have the ability to control the charger. Your host will have to read the data from the gauge and communicate that accross to the charger. With that configuration the bq27510 would be a better fit.

  • Onyx,

Bear with me on this one, I’m learning as I go. This is my first Li-ion project. I was hoping for a system that could manage its self and I would just ping it for battery info as needed.

I understand what you’re saying about the BMU now, but that leads to more questions.

How do I know what data needs to go between the charger and the fuel gauge? Is there a handy table in the documents that lays out the required data and update rates? I’m skimming through the documents now and nothing is popping out at me.

Will my host be overwhelmed by these tasks?

Could it be that my first choice is the best choice and I should deal with the BGA footprint challenge? That’s a question I’ll need to answer, but just throwing it out there.

    Thanks,
    Dave
  • Hi Dave,
It really isn't much that your charger needs. Just charging current and charging voltage. The host needs other parameters to determine when to shut your system down like state of charge, state of health. You determine what your hosts need to read from the gauge.

    thanks
