Battery charger for 8S Lion battery pack

Hi Sir,

I am looking to select a battery charger IC with the following capabilities:

-Charge Lion packs of 8S configuration up to a maximum voltage of 33.6V (4.2*8)

-Charge at a rate of 4A

How about bq24610EVM-603? but seems TI had not focus on this solution or has any options to investigate?

Thanks,

Regards,

Driscoll

  • Hello Driscoll,

Unfortunately, we do not have a charger in our current portfolio that supports 8s battery. Can you please let us know  what is the application? Thanks.

  • Hi Jing,

    How about bq24610EVM-603 solution?

application: backup power for SSD system

    Regards,
    Driscoll

  • For high voltage charger, some customers like one stage converter to converter the AC power to charging power. bq24610EVM-603 solution is a DC to DC converter. From AC to DC, it needs another converter stage. Also, high voltage and high power switching charger application need a lot of supports for a non-experienced customer. As you said, TI had not focus on this solution.

But, we may have an integrated high voltage charger on our road may later. For that backup power for SSD system, what is the input voltage range? When the input source is removed, does the battery voltage range fit the SSD system input voltage range?
  • Hi Wang,

this system input is 36V+-5% to charge 8S battery and backup power is 12V through LT3892 buck converter to SSD system.
    thanks~

    Best Regards,
    Driscoll
  • Driscoll,

    Thank you for your input.
What is the 8S battery full charge voltage? 8S Li-ion battery's full charge voltage could be 4.2x8=33.6V. the minimum input is 36x95%=34.2V. The input and output voltage too close. If you are going to use bq24610EVM-603 solution, please reduce the charger voltage or increasing the input voltage a little bit.
