TPS65311-Q1: TPS65311-Q1: VSSENSE pin protection for reverse battery?

Part Number: TPS65311-Q1

Team,

I don't see how adding a diode will help with reverse battery protection and exceeding the abs max value of -1V of the VSSENSE(1) pin. Can you explain this to me a bit more? I see there is an internal divider, are we relying on the external 20kOhms and the internal divider values to maintain the voltage at VSSENSE to <-1V during this condition.

  • Hi Julio,

There is a small ESD diode on every pin of the device that can conduct small amounts of current. Generally, they have a Vf around 0.5V. This, combined with the current limiting resistor on VSSENSE should limit the VSSENSE voltage to around -0.5V as long as the resistance is high enough. The diode is there to prevent the ESD diode on VIN from turning on and blowing up (since there is no current limiting resistor on VIN).
